Japanese Head Spa: 9 Questions Visitors Ask Before Booking

By Kazunari Nakamura, hair stylist for 15 years, owner of LUJU Ginza
Updated October 3, 2026

People planning a trip to Japan search for the same questions about head spas: how much, how often, is it worth it, and can I have one if I am pregnant or have extensions.

Here are plain answers from LUJU, a hair salon in Ginza. Where the answer depends on the shop, we say what we do at LUJU.

Quick answers

  • A head spa is care and relaxation. It is not a treatment for hair loss or dandruff.
  • Most courses in Tokyo take 60 to 120 minutes and cost about ¥12,000 to ¥43,000.
  • If you are pregnant or have extensions, tell the shop when you book.

1. How much is a Japanese head spa?

On 3 October 2026 we checked the English menus of three head spa shops in central Tokyo. Courses of 60 to 120 minutes cost about ¥12,000 to ¥43,000. At LUJU, head spa with LALA PEEL is ¥19,800 before tax on your first visit and takes about 2 hours.

2. How long does it take?

Most courses take 60 to 120 minutes. Check whether the time on the menu is the whole visit or only the treatment.

3. How often do people have one?

For a visitor, once during your trip is fine. For people who live here, it depends on the person. At LUJU, guests come back about every 6 weeks on average, across all our menus (as of July 2026).

4. Is it worth it?

It depends on what you want. A head spa is a good fit if you want to lie back for an hour or two, have your scalp massaged slowly, and leave with clean, dry hair. If you only want a quick wash, a normal shampoo and blow-dry is enough.

5. Can I have a head spa if I am pregnant?

Tell the shop when you book. At LUJU, guests who are pregnant or nursing can receive LALA PEEL. Please tell us first, because your body and skin change easily in this period. We also talk with you about the head spa before the day. If you are unsure, ask your doctor.

6. Can I have one with hair extensions or colored hair?

Write it in the message box when you book. It depends on the type of extensions and the state of your hair, so we look at your hair first and then decide.

7. Is a head spa good for hair loss or dandruff?

A head spa is care and relaxation, not a medical treatment. We do not treat hair loss or dandruff. If you are worried about either, please see a dermatologist.

8. Do I tip? Do I need to speak Japanese?

There is no tipping in Japan. You pay the menu price plus tax. Many shops use a translation app or device. At LUJU we mainly speak Japanese and use a translation app, and you can book with our English form.

9. What about my hair and makeup after?

Your hair is washed and blow-dried, so you do not need to wash it before you come. At LUJU the course includes LALA PEEL for the face, and you can put your makeup back on after.
